Telecom gear demand to surge in 24–25: Nokia

Although the 5G network has been fully implemented by Indian telecom providers, a top company official at Nokia predicted that there will be a significant demand for equipment in 2024–2025. At the India Mobile Congress, Tarun Chhabra, president of Nokia India’s mobile networks division, told PTI that the country’s telecom industry will enter the second phase of 5G network rollout when fixed wireless access networks become more widespread.

Nokia’s telecom gear business in India has experienced multi-fold growth due to the rapid implementation of 5G networks.

Israeli chip manufacturer Tower tries again to bring a fabrication plant to India

According to reports, Israel-based chip company Tower Semiconductor is thinking about establishing a semiconductor production factory in India and has renewed its interest in the nation’s chip incentive scheme a second time.

Due to regulatory concerns, Intel withdrew its $5.4 billion acquisition plan of Tower Semiconductor in August.

Tower’s application might significantly advance New Delhi’s chipmaking goals as it would be the first semiconductor company with a strong fabrication background to apply for India’s $10 billion chip manufacturing project.

First bid for 3,000 e-buses under PM-eBus Sewa to be released

According to reports, the central government is expected to release tenders for the first batch of 3,000 electric buses under the PM-eBus Sewa scheme announced in August.

Five states have submitted plans to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) for more than 3,000 buses.

The central government would offer financial support of Rs 20,000 crore for the operation of 10,000 electric buses under the Rs 57,613-crore PM-eBus Sewa plan. The scheme is primarily for cities with inadequate or nonexistent public transportation. The scheme will also assist with infrastructure for green mobility.

Tata group to manufacture iPhones, acquires Wistron Corp’s India unit for $125 million

With Taiwan-based Wistron Corp., an Apple Inc. contract manufacturer, selling its India operation to the salt-to-software conglomerate for $125 million, the Tata group is poised to become the first Indian iPhone manufacturer.

The statement from Wistron stated that it held a board meeting on Friday and granted approval for its subsidiaries, Wistron Hong Kong and SMS InfoComm (Singapore) to sign a share purchase agreement with Tata Electronics for the sale of its 100% indirect stake in Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing (India).

The Tatas will take over Wistron’s Karnataka factory, where the iPhone SE (second generation), iPhone 12 and 15 Plus are currently being produced and assembled.

Indian firm Sahasra Semiconductors produces memory chips for the first time

The US memory chip powerhouse Micron Technology revealed early in June that it would be investing over Rs 22,540 crore to establish a semiconductor assembly and testing facility in Gujarat.

According to a report in the Economic Times, Amrit Manwani, the Managing Director of Sahasra Group, stated that the company was the pioneer in offering “Made-in-India” micro-SD cards and that the items had garnered remarkable feedback on e-commerce platforms.

On October 27, India’s Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, highlighted the country’s large talent pool when expressing his excitement about India’s potential to become a major hub for semiconductor manufacture.

India’s telecom security directive to cover all connected devices by 2027: NCSC

By 2027, the Indian government wants to make sure that all connected devices originate from reliable sources, according to a statement made on October 27 by Lt Gen MU Nair, the newly appointed National Cybersecurity Coordinator (NCSC).

According to Nair the scope of National Security Directive on Telecommunication Sector (NSDTS) will increase over the next few years and every device that is connected to a network, whether hardware or software used, will all be from a trusted source and are a trusted product.

‘Trusted’ and ‘non-trusted’ categories will be used by the NSDTS, which was introduced in 2021 to categorise telecom products and suppliers.

Under the National Security Council Secretariat, the NCSC collaborates with many central agencies on essential and urgent national cyber security concerns.

Manufacturing value chain needs to be localized: PM Modi

During his inaugural speech at the 7th edition of the India Mobile Congress (IMC 2023) now taking place in the nation’s capital, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on India to boost cybersecurity by bringing the entire manufacturing value chain under national jurisdiction.

He also underlined how important it is for India to assume a position of thought leadership in the technology sector. The Prime Minister stated that India should now assume a thought leadership role in the twenty-first century, having previously lost numerous opportunities to embrace and apply technology. Cabinet approves India-Japan agreement on semiconductor supply chain

According to an official statement, the Union Cabinet approved a memorandum of cooperation between Japan and India on a semiconductor supply chain partnership.

A memorandum of cooperation between the two countries was signed in July.

The MoC intends to strengthen cooperation between India and Japan towards enhancement of semiconductor supply chain, recognizing the importance of semiconductor for the advancement of industries and digital technologies,” stated the statement.

The parties agree that the MoC shall take effect on the date of signature and last for five years.
