According to the ministry of ports, shipping, and waterways, the Center will on Saturday request expressions of interest (EoI) for the construction of an international container transhipment port at Galathea Bay of Great Nicobar in the Bay of Bengal.

The anticipated cost of the project, which also includes an airport, a power plant, and a township, is Rs 72,000 crore. The Center has set the price tag for the port at Rs 41,000 crore, and it will be built through a public-private partnership (PPP).

For the project, up to 850,000 trees may need to be cut down. It is understood that the Center ultimately opted to move forward with the project despite the various environmental concerns that were brought to light during the project’s development stage because they saw an economic opportunity in the marine trade of south-east Asia.
