Experts Highlight AI’s Transformative Role in Strengthening Vietnam’s Audit Capacity

An international conference on enhancing audit capacity through artificial intelligence (AI) was held in Hanoi on October 13, co-organised by the State Audit Office of Vietnam (SAV) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). The event brought together over 100 senior representatives from international organisations, audit institutions, and financial and academic sectors to discuss how AI can improve audit quality, transparency, and governance. Experts agreed that AI offers powerful tools to accelerate data processing, strengthen accountability, and enhance the accuracy of public financial oversight. However, they also warned that technology must be guided by human intelligence and ethics. SAV officials highlighted ongoing digital transformation efforts, including new audit support software and AI integration, while noting key challenges such as data-sharing limitations, an incomplete legal framework, and uneven technological readiness among auditors.

ACCA Global President Ayla Majid emphasised that AI enhances auditing’s core purpose — ensuring transparency and trust — but underscored the need for continuous learning and collaboration between audit bodies, regulators, and enterprises. Corporate leaders like Techcom Securities’ Deputy CEO Ngo Hoang Ha shared practical insights on using AI for risk assessment, data analytics, and operational efficiency, while maintaining human oversight in decision-making. Participants collectively agreed that public-private partnerships and international cooperation will be vital in building a sustainable, technology-driven auditing ecosystem, where AI acts as an enabler of better governance rather than a replacement for professional judgment.

Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship Spurs Progress in Trade, Digital Economy, says Thai’s Suphajee

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 25 — Thailand’s new Minister of Commerce Suphajee Suthumpun has heaped praise on Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship this year, notably Putrajaya, for having led the grouping in advancing regional economic integration. Under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership, Suphajee said regional trade has been further reinforced despite the 58-year-old Southeast Asian grouping facing immense geopolitical challenges.

Foremost were the debilitating tariffs imposed by the United States on all 10 ASEAN member states. “Under Malaysia’s leadership, ASEAN has also taken steps to strengthen strategic policy coordination to address geopolitical uncertainties and emerging global challenges. “This includes promoting economic resilience, enhancing regional financial safety nets and developing policies that ensure ASEAN remains stable, competitive and adaptable in a rapidly changing world,” she told Bernama ahead of the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits taking place over the weekend.

Malaysia took over as ASEAN Chair for 2025 from Laos last year, while the next chairmanship would be held by the Philippines. Touching on the 47th ASEAN Summit, Suphajee said Bangkok expects the gathering to serve as a pivotal platform for ASEAN to reaffirm its unity and economic vision amid growing geopolitical and geoeconomic uncertainties. She said the summit would demonstrate ASEAN’s progress through the substantial completion of its Priority Economic Deliverables (PEDs) for 2025, including major outcomes such as the signing of the Second Protocol to Amend the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA) and the upgraded ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (ACTA 3.0). “These milestones will strengthen regional supply chains and enhance intra-ASEAN trade, which is expected to grow beyond the current share of around 21.4 per cent of total trade by 2030,” she said.

MSIC 2025 Can Enable Govt to Implement Targeted Economic Policies – DOSM

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 28 (Bernama) — The new industry classification under the Malaysia Standard Industrial Classification (MSIC) 2025 will enable the government to implement more targeted economic policies based on more detailed and up-to-date data. Chief Statistician of Malaysia Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the move also further strengthens the country’s economic structure as the number of industry codes in MSIC 2025 increases by 6.3 per cent to 1,248 industry codes compared to 1,174 codes in MSIC 2008 Version 1.0. “This increase reflects the expansion of the structure of the country’s economic activities and the emergence of new sectors based on technology, innovation, and sustainability.

MSIC 2025 is the new standard framework for classifying types of economic activities in Malaysia, replacing the MSIC 2008 Version 1.0 classification which has been in use for the past 17 years, and it is the sixth edition of the national economic activity classification standard, first published in 1957. The updating of MSIC 2025 is also in line with the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC) Revision 5, published by the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD). Mohd Uzir also explained that with a more detailed structure, the government can identify the contributions of new sectors such as content creators, renewable energy, drones, and digital currency to the national economy.”

According to Mohd Uzir, this effort also assists government agencies such as SME Corp and the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry in obtaining more accurate data to support the development of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) by sector and area. “This move allows the national official statistics system to be organised in line with international best practices. MSIC 2025 will be fully utilised for the 2026 Economic Census to ensure that all data released is based on the latest industry classification,” he said. He also announced that the Creative Industry Satellite Account will be published this November to assess the creative sector’s contribution to the national economy, following the previous publication of satellite accounts for the sports, tourism, and digital economy sectors.

“We need to explore how we can advance discussions toward establishing a network that ensures the safe and responsible use of AI across the ASEAN region,” he said. “So there must be continued collaboration and dialogue to ensure that each country understands the structures being developed within their own systems, and how we can collectively foster a sense of unity among ASEAN nations in formulating AI safety policies,” he said after officiating the Powering the Intelligent Age: Driving Innovation with the Southeast Asia and Beyond Summit here today. The summit was organized by the Digital Ministry, through the Malaysian Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (MYCentre4IR), in collaboration with the World Economic Forum (WEF), to strengthen cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI), digitalisation and green industrial transformation.

It brought together more than 400 delegates from 14 countries, including senior policymakers, industry leaders, researchers and startup founders. Meanwhile, the Digital ministry, in a statement, said ASEAN AI Safe serves as a regional mechanism to support the ASEAN Digital Senior Officials’ Meeting (ADGSOM) and the Working Group on AI Governance (WG-AI), aimed at strengthening regional capacity, fostering cooperation, promoting research and innovation in AI safety, and advancing the safe and responsible use of AI technologies. ASEAN AI Safe will be guided by existing regional frameworks, including the ASEAN Digital Masterplan 2025; the Guidelines on AI Governance and Ethics; and the ASEAN Responsible AI Roadmap 2025-2025.

US to consider Malaysia’s semiconductor sector in Section 232 tariff talks, says Liew Chin Tong

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 30 — The United States will give special consideration to Malaysia’s semiconductor sector in tariff negotiations under Section 232 of the US Trade Expansion Act of 1962, said Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong. He said the tariffs on semiconductors are sectoral and were not included in the recently signed Malaysia-US Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART). “The TRA does not include sectoral tariffs… semiconductors fall under Section 232, which the US Secretary of Commerce will consider.  What was negotiated was with the US Trade Representative (USTR),” he said during a question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Liew was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Ahmad Amzad Mohamed @ Hashim (PN-Kuala Terengganu) on the impact of ART on the semiconductor sector. Separately, in response to a question from Datuk Dr Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh (PN-Pasir Puteh) on halal certification following the ART, Liew said the process for approving imports of halal products from the US remains unchanged under the agreement. He said imports must comply with Malaysia’s halal standards and the Trade Descriptions Act (Trade Descriptions (Halal Certification and Labelling) Order 2011) for trade within Malaysia. “These regulations stipulate that only halal products certified by US halal certification bodies recognised by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) and that meet Malaysia’s halal requirements will be approved and permitted for export to Malaysia,” he elaborated.
